About the Organization
MissionThe DLC’s mission is to help adults meet their life goals by offering learner-centered educational opportunities. We believe that each adult has the power to change their life and their community through literacy.
The Durham Literacy Center serves adults and older youth who have low-literacy skills, lack English language proficiency, and/or lack a high school diploma, which correlates to lower income and higher unemployment rates than the rest of the population. Our target populations have been historically disenfranchised by educational and economic systems. Our programs teach adults to read and write, prepare out-of-school youth and adult learners to pass high school equivalency tests (such as the GED® and HiSet®), provide English classes for immigrant adults, provide high school equivalency and life skills classes for incarcerated youth at the Durham County Detention Facility, and train and support hundreds of volunteers each year to help students achieve their educational and career goals.
